Gregory T. Camp, a former investment banker, prosecutor, and Deputy Director of Criminal Justice for New York State, is the Republican and Liberal Party candidate for Manhattan District Attorney in 2009.

Mr. Camp is a progressive, pro-choice Republican who supports gun control and marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. Based upon a lifelong opposition to capital punishment, he has been a nationally active opponent of the death penalty for 14 years.

Mr. Camp is running to succeed legendary District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, under whom he served from 1999 to 2006. As an Assistant District Attorney, Mr. Camp prosecuted domestic violence, organized crime, and other major felonies. He also served as a senior member of the highly successful Labor Racketeering/Construction Industry Strike Force. In recognition of his expertise in the finance industry and his skills as a prosecutor, Governor George Pataki appointed Mr. Camp Deputy Director of Criminal Justice for New York State in 2006, where he oversaw the prosecution of tax fraud statewide.

Mr. Camp ran for the New York State Assembly in 2007. In that race (65th A.D. Manhattan), he received endorsements from the non-partisan Citizens Union, The New York Times, The New York Sun, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Mr. Camp had a successful, eleven-year career in New York’s financial community, before becoming a prosecutor, working with Dillon, Read & Co. Inc., Salomon Brothers Inc., Charles Street Inc., and Newfield Capital Inc., where he was a managing director. He returned to Newfield Capital in late 2007, as a managing director, where he and two partners have worked to build a European-based media venture.

Mr. Camp grew up in a rent-regulated apartment in Stuyvesant Town, where his mother, a former NYC public school teacher and UFT chapter chairperson, still resides. He received a BA, magna cum laude, in Economics from Yale University, an MBA from the Yale School of Management, and a JD from Yale Law School.

A resident of the Upper East Side for 19 years, Mr. Camp lives on East 69th Street with his partner, Sonia Ossorio, a prominent women’s rights advocate in New York City, where they are raising their 5-month-old daughter, Olivia, and his two teenage children, Catherine and Chris. Mr. Camp is a board member of the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta, GA, and a member of the New York City Bar Association’s Committee on Capital Punishment.
